The good news is, school french is great for writing. The bad news is, french people are people, and not some alien species that always obeys the rules of grammar. As such, they have slang and can abbreviate anything they want.
They'll understand your slow, boring, grammatically correct speech - it's just a matter of whether or not you'll understand their high speed tongue flapping.
