Using my physics knowledge, I know that a longer barrel means more time to accelerate which means more speed and more force on impact, and a smaller bullet means less mass for the acceleration to act upon, so you get a greater force, and greater acceleration, and thus again more speed and more force on impact.
Which means that ideally you want a very long, very thin, barrel. Which isn't really a good thing in this situation.

I've got no formulas for increased accuracy, but my best guess is that it stems from having a greater force and velocity. With the mass a bullet has, it doesn't tend to encounter much air resistance, but that doesn't mean wind won't affect it. I'd assume that good snipers would take that into account, though.
That being said, greater force and velocity means it'll get where it's going much faster. Less time spent traveling, less time to have its course affected.
Put it this way, here's the formula for final velocity:
Final velocity = Initial velocity (0, because the bullet begins at rest) + 1/2*(acceleartion [which depends on the gunpowder as well as the bullet itself])*(time [which is entirely dependent on the barrel of the gun])^2
Seeing as time is squared, the shorter the barrel, the worse it is. If your barrel is 0.1 meters (10 cm), and the time to get through it is something like 0.0503 seconds (pulling that number out of my ass, which is where I store questions from tests I've already finished, though I can't guarantee the accuracy of these numbers at this point), then that ends up with 0.00253009 for that. Multiply that by your MASSIVE acceleration, then divide by two, and that's your final velocity.
Final velocity on exiting the barrel for a regular rifle tends to be +600 m/s, give or take a couple dozen meters at the most. After that it slows down the entire way, because there's no more acceleration, but that tends to confuse people.
Now, that's a regular rifle. An M40 has a muzzle velocity (alright, alright, I checked wikipedia and grabbed the first sniper rifle to check, and also learned the actual term because I wasn't sure and was going to use exit velocity) of 777 m/s. The reason why that's not a huge amount higher is because when the barrel is TOO long, the initial combustion of the gun powder will lose its effect. So, barrel length needs to be balanced with the type and amount of gunpowder used, as well as size of the bullet being fired.
For reference, Net Force = Mass * Acceleration. Acceleration = Net Force/Mass. This means that a smaller mass, for the same force, requires a greater acceleration. Or, looking at it the other way which tends to be easier for people, a smaller mass means a greater acceleration, because we divide with it.

Unless she's a bodybuilder, though, you probably have the advantage physically. It's just a question of how much you hurt her hand when you shoot the knife, really.
